Ivo Gomperts Boneca

He worked for his thesis under the supervision of Prof. Alexander Tomasz, at The Rockefeller University, New York, USA, and obtained his PhD in biology from the Institute of Technical Chemistry and Biology in Lisbon in 2000. He then joined the Institut Pasteur as a post-doctoral fellow in 2000 and became the head of a Junior group at the Institut Pasteur in 2008 and of a full research unit in 2013. His ongoing work and projects aim at deciphering one of the major “Achilles heels” of bacteria, their cell wall and in particular the role of peptidoglycan metabolism in host-bacterial interactions, in order to improve our future options in dealing with old and “emerging” infectious diseases. Ivo Boneca est le responsable de l'unité de recherche « Biologie et Génétique de la paroi bactérienne » à l'Institut Pasteur. Il a effectué sa thèse sous la direction du Pr. Alexander Tomasz, à la Rockefeller University, New York, USA. Il a obtenu son doctorat en 2000 de l’Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica (ITQB) de l’Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL). Il a ensuite rejoint l'Institut Pasteur en tant que chercheur postdoctorant en 2000 et est devenu chef d'un groupe junior à l'Institut Pasteur en 2008 et d'une unité de recherche en 2013. Il est également membre actif du consortium "Microbes & Brain" à l'Institut Pasteur, qui regroupe les neuroscientifiques, les immunologistes et les microbiologistes de l'institut. Son travail porte sur l’étude d'un des "talons d'Achille" majeur des bactéries, la paroi bactérienne et en particulier le rôle du métabolisme du peptidoglycane dans les interactions hôte-bactéries, dans le but de développer de nouvelles stratégies thérapeutiques pour traiter les maladies infectieuses anciennes et émergentes.
